Keeping Sarasota Memorial Hospital a Publicly

Owned Facility

There has been pressure out of Tallahassee in recent years to privatize public hospitals. These external influences believe that private, for profit hospitals can serve our community better than a publicly owned entity. Bob has been a strong opponent to this effort, believing that SMH continues to best serve the interests of the community that both owns it and guides its future.  As a publicly owned entity, Sarasota Memorial Hospital has earned more awards and recognitions than many in the private sector. It has for many years consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals in the nation. Sarasota Memorial is the only local hospital on U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best Hospitals list. It is ranked among Florida's top 10 hospitals and is the top-performer for overall care in the Sarasota-Bradenton region. SMH is one of just 3 percent of all hospitals to earn a national ranking. Consumer Reports reported in its 2014 hospital rankings that Sarasota Memorial had the lowest readmission rate in the nation for hospitals with at least 500 beds. You can read more detail about your publicly owned award winning hospital here. There continues to be an active effort underway to influence this election, using special interest money for the ultimate goal of making Sarasota Memorial Hospital a privately owned, for profit entity. Bob is adamant that this cannot happen to the people of Sarasota County. Bob has been a tireless champion of Sarasota Memorial for twenty years, and has an active record of supporting this community based hospital. He will continue to oppose its privatization, and looks forward to continuing  the successful path that your public hospital is traveling.
